Habri, jina lako ni nani? Jina langu ni Jacqui,
I've never found learning a language to be my forte, I'm pleased to say my Swahili is starting to come along, already I can ask for the toilet (always a priority for me) please and thank you are always important, so I've got them sussed.
I recall, years ago I was traveling through France, and being too nervous to use the little bit of school girl French I knew. I was terrified the locals would think I knew more than I did and start talking to me, (I was young, I was stupid well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it) so for the entire trip I was a near mute, reliant on my husband at the time, to speak, order and basically get us through. Not the case this time.. I've got four and half months to get a few phrases and useful words under my overpriced Kathmandu belt.To me, the build up to a trip has always been nearly as exciting as going, I love the preparation, the reading of where I'm going. But this time, I don't know if I'm under playing the basic'ness of my destination or will I be pleasantly surprised when I get there? If I'm honest the basic'ness is one of the things that really appeal to me. I'm not a shopper, or one that needs to be waited on hand and foot, the thought of just being there is more than enough for me. But random thoughts do keep popping into my head at the most inconvenient time, I'll just be drifting off to sleep and I'll find my mind wandering to the Rift Valley, when all of a suddenly I sit bolt upright and think..... "do I need to take a pillow?"
It's Sunday, it's pouring with rain, what better way to spend the day but watching the last day of the Olympics and mastering my Swahili, though the second to last phrase on my Useful Swahili Phrase list
"Gari langu linaloangama limejaa na mikunga - My hovercraft is full of eels."tells me the author either has a brilliant sense of humour, or I really am under prepared for this trip, fingers crossed it's not the latter.
Asante
Jacq
